Challenge

Structural Movement Across Large Openings

Large wall-to-wall sliding openings created concerns around slab deflection and structural movement, which can cause oversized panels to bind or become inoperable over time. The system needed to accommodate vertical movement while preserving tight sightlines and concealed detailing.

Project

Trousdale Residence | Challenge Two

Process

01 Increased blade gap tolerances to allow structural movement without panel interference.

02 Customized track assemblies and modified jamb conditions to absorb movement while maintaining alignment.

03 Developed concealed head and jamb detailing that allowed finishes to continue uninterrupted over system transitions.

04 Coordinated hidden header conditions to visually mirror the recessed threshold.

Result

The sliding systems maintain smooth operation despite structural movement and slab deflection across large spans. Concealed detailing preserves the appearance of a continuous opening while allowing the structure to move independently from the glazing system.
