Challenge

Custom Bronze-Clad Mullions and Oxidized Bronze Finish

The project required the facade's underlying aluminum structure to be completely concealed behind custom architectural bronze, creating a continuous bronze-and-glass exterior with no exposed aluminum. The bronze had to follow the geometry of the facade's structural mullions while maintaining precise, consistent sightlines across different profile conditions. The material also required a specialized oxidation and protective finishing process to achieve the desired architectural appearance.

Process

01

Trü developed custom-fabricated bronze mullion cladding to conceal the underlying Schüco FW 50+S aluminum structure. The cladding was formed and detailed around the project’s T-mullion and rectangular mullion geometries, allowing the bronze to follow the structural facade while becoming the primary visible exterior material.

‍

02

The bronze was specified with a patina finish to achieve the desired architectural coloration, then protected with multiple coats of clear flat-coat protection. The finishing system was selected to help maintain the appearance of the oxidized bronze while protecting the surface from UV exposure and the California environment.

03

At the base of the facade, the bronze cladding was coordinated with the buried sill condition, allowing the bronze and glass to continue toward the ground plane without introducing conventional exposed aluminum.

‍

04

Particular attention was given to the transitions between bronze-clad mullions, structural glazing, and adjacent architectural materials. The cladding was detailed to maintain consistent reveals, joints, corners, and sightlines across the facade.

Result

The bronze cladding transforms the underlying aluminum facade into a cohesive bronze-and-glass envelope, concealing the conventional framing from view. The oxidized finish, protected by a clear-coat system, adds depth while helping preserve the intended appearance.

‍

By fabricating the bronze around the facade’s structural geometry, Trü integrated custom metalwork, structural glazing, and the high-performance curtain wall system into a single coordinated envelope.
